The Work of Critical Reflection: Using Four Lens
Tuesday Aug 06, 2024
Tuesday Aug 06, 2024
Critical reflection is an important part of our work as teachers. Kristin, Jeff, and Stuart discuss the four lenses through which teaching practices can be examined: the personal lens, the student lens, the colleague lens, and the theoretical lens. Sadly, Tina had technical difficulties and couldn't join us for this discussion. But don't feel too badly about her plight — she was in Prado, Italy.

Feeling Drained? You're Not Alone! Managing Your Energy
Tuesday Jul 09, 2024
Tuesday Jul 09, 2024
The Fika Crew explores the things that boost and drain our mental and physical energy. Energy management (personal and organizational energy, not national energy policy) seems like an appropriate topic as we head into the summer months. Learning what generates positive energy and how to mitigate things that drain, sap, and siphon energy can enhance our satisfaction, persistence, and effectiveness.

Aspiring Academics: Preparing the Next Generation of Pharmacy Educators
Tuesday Jun 11, 2024
Tuesday Jun 11, 2024
The Fika Crew talks with Sara Stallworth, PharmD, MPH from the University of Kentucky and Mira Haddad from The Ohio State University about their journey toward a career in academia. Joining a college or school of pharmacy (or other academic institution) as a faculty member can be enormously rewarding, but it is not right for everyone. How do programs like AACP's Aspiring Academics and formal training programs help people determine if academia is a good fit?

Upping Your SoTL Game & Tapping into Intrinsic Motivation
Tuesday May 07, 2024
Tuesday May 07, 2024
On the heels of March Madness (the NCAA College Basketball Tournament) and the Spring Rx Writing Challenge, the Fika Crew talks with Zachary Noel, PharmD, PhD, BCCP—Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy—about his recently published paper on ungrading individual readiness assessment tests (iRAT) and its impact on student performance and motivation in a team-based learning course. We then go on tangents to discuss how to become a better education researcher, the keys to enhancing the rigor of SoTL efforts, and our personal motivations to persist.

The Fika Crew (back in full force this month) talk about the challenges of receiving feedback. How we receive feedback is colored by our identity (and beliefs about self), the relationship with the person giving feedback, and our beliefs about what is "true." Few of us have had formal instruction on how to receive feedback well - but perhaps this should be explicitly addressed in our curricula.
We'd love to receive your feedback! Please rate our podcast and provide comments about this episode using your favorite podcasting app.

The Art of Delivering Feedback that Fuels Success
Tuesday Mar 05, 2024
Tuesday Mar 05, 2024
Three of the Fika Crew (missing Kristin's wisdom) talk about their challenges and successes in delivering meaningful feedback to learners. Using a consistent and shared framework for providing feedback to learners in various contexts (assignments, practice laboratory, OSLEs, and experiential education) can make feedback more apparent, more actionable, more efficient, and more effective.
We'd love to receive your feedback! Please rate our podcast and provide comments about this episode using your favorite podcasting app.

Counting What Counts - Cultivating Impactful Service in the Academy
Tuesday Feb 06, 2024
Tuesday Feb 06, 2024
The Fika crew invited Caroline L. Ko, PharmD, BCCCP - Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Pacific - and Ila M. Saunders, PharmD, BCOP - Health Sciences Clinical Associate Professor at the University of California San Diego - to talk about their work to create the PharmGradWishList and how service can be uplifted and recognized in the academy. Ultimately, faculty bear the responsibility of telling the story of how their service work makes the world and the academy a better place. But perhaps we should create better structures for measuring, reporting, and valuing service work.
Be sure to visit (and donate to): PharmGradWishList

Competency-based Education: From Knowing, to Knowing How, to Showing, to Doing
Tuesday Jan 09, 2024
Tuesday Jan 09, 2024
In this epidose, we speak with Denise H. Rhoney - Ron and Nancy McFarlane Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy - and Zubin Austin - Professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto - about Competency-based Education (CBE). There is a movement afoot to transform health professions education to de-emphasize time and focus on a core set of competencies. However, defining the competencies, creating authentic assessments, and dismantling "courses" to ensure curricular alignment are major challenges to turning the promise of CBE into a reality. Is it worth it? Or is CBE just another pedagogical methodology du jour?
- Introductions and Fika Sharing from 0:00 to 2:36
- Our conversation about competency-based education starts at 2:36
